MBA graduate Joshua Karthik co-founded Stories by Joseph Radhik, one of the most famous wedding photography firms in India, in 2012. He and his partner Joseph and their team has since shot Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal, Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli and Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s high-profile weddings and other 400 marriages across the country.

We ask him five crucial questions about running a photography business in India.

What does it take to shoot the big day of popular celebrities?

While shooting famous people, we must remember and respect the fact that these people are photographed every day and have been part of some of the best shoots ever. But in a wedding there are no takes or retakes, there is no director screaming ‘action’. Nothing is staged. A wedding is a very emotional event and we ensure that all the little moments of the event are captured beautifully.

How do you conceptualise an image?

We draw references from everywhere, from photojournalism, war, landscape and art. We scan through all these pictures not because we want to replicate the photographs they have taken, but to get the overall concept. When a picture is clicked in real time, without it being staged or posed, it tells a story. That’s the beauty of wedding photography.

What is your advice for aspiring wedding photographers?

Wedding photography is all about people. It’s about how you deal and work with them. Photography is as important as any other art. Some photographers tend to forget that there are real people in front of the camera. Very few actually interact with the couple. But as a wedding photographer, it is very important to know the couple well and talk to them to get better pictures.

Also, you could follow many photographers’ work or read several books on photography but what’s important is to apply the theoretical knowledge and do things practically. A photographer needs to continuously upskill himself to keep up with the latest trends.

What challenges do an aspiring photographer face?

Most only see the glamour side of wedding photography. One needs to know that it is a very strenuous job. You have to be on your toes the entire day and can’t afford to let your guard down. This job is more demanding than an average desk job. A photographer needs to put in a lot of effort to stand out from the crowd.

How can a photographer run a successful business?

A photographer must not forget that he is also an entrepreneur. If he is unable to run his business, his career will end quickly. There is no point in just clicking good pictures and having great knowledge of the equipment. To run a business, he has to pay attention to every minute detail like the level of job satisfaction in his team, maintaining a good relationship with clients, and the likes. These will help a photographer succeed.
